The first people to live in Maine were Native Americans. Some of the tribes were the Abenaki and the Massieet. Maine became a state as part of the Missouri Compromise. Maine became a state because Missouri wanted to become a state, so they needed a free state and the free state was Maine. Maine became a state in 1820. It's capital was Portland but, in 1832 Augusta became their capital.
